Free Life Coaching!

Dear Friends, Family and Fellow Seekers,

As many of you know, I am currently enrolled in the Martha Beck Life Coach Training Program.  This eight-month long intensive training program concludes in September, after which time I will begin working towards certification.  It is the most exciting, soul-fulfilling thing I have ever done.

I am thrilled to announce that, as part of my training, I am beginning to work with a few clients at absolutely no cost, other than time and a willingness to play.  If you are interested in working with me for a series of five, one-hour telephone sessions (for free!), please fill out the contact information below.  We will begin with a 30 minute, introductory call, to discuss the coaching process, your goals, and whether we are a good coaching match.  (If for some reason I believe you would be better served by working with someone else, I will happily refer you to one of my incredible colleagues.)  All of your information (as well as the fact that you expressed interest) will be kept strictly confidential.  For more information on what life coaching is about, refer to my Coaching page.  And if you know of someone else who might be interested in working with me, please feel free to share this with them.

In the future, I plan on working with many more clients as well as offering various programs and telecourses, so stay tuned!

Thank you again for your love and support,

Jennifer

The Journey Home

It’s all true.

Everything the lovers and dreamers said about following your heart, your north star, your bliss–it’s all true.  Every bit of it.  I’ve read all the books encouraging it; I’ve hoped and dreamed thIMG_1608at it was true; I was willing to believe it.  I just hadn’t seen it.  Until now.  There really is magic and mystery in following the path your soul longs to take.  Friends do appear to help you; the impossible becomes possible simply to speed your journey.  I have no idea how it works, but I am so very grateful that it does.

And yet, that is not quite true.  We all know that there is something magical and transformative about love.  And so why should it be any different when we fall in love with our path?  When you fall in love with where you are and what you are doing, all manner of things become possible.  You are transformed, and your life along with you.  So of course the lovers and dreamers were right all along.  Fall in love with your life, and miracles will surround you.

It took me a long time to find my path and fall in love with it.  If you are still seeking yours, I would say only this:  don’t give up.  Your journey is leading you to just where you need to go.  You may not realize it–I certainly didn’t, not for a very long time–but you are already on the road you are meant to take.  Every part of your life is part of the adventure.  Every part of it is, somehow, bringing you home.

The place where you are right now

God circled on a map for you.

Turtle Steps

IMG_1059I always swore that I wouldn’t be one of those blog-creators who mysteriously disappear and then return a month or so later full of apologies and promises to be more consistent in the future…  But here I am.  Luckily, I believe in the philosophy of wabi sabi–that nothing is perfect, nothing is permanent and nothing is finished.  That most certainly includes this website.

But I have exciting news to share–this year, I am fulfilling a long-standing dream to become a Martha Beck trained life coach.  The program begins in 2 weeks, and is a 9 month, intensive training of Martha Beck’s life design methods.  As you may have noticed from reading these posts, I am a huge fan of Martha Beck and her work, and I recommend her writing very strongly.

One practice that she advocates is “turtle steps,” that is, taking goals and breaking them into small pieces until they are so simple you just can’t help but accomplish them.  Most people tend to set huge goals, particularly at this time of the year–to lose so many pounds, to begin a massive workout program or to achieve some other high and lofty goal.  These goals, while commendable, are also daunting.  They tend to scare us out of accomplishing anything.  It is far preferable to set a smaller, reachable goal, and then continue to build on it.

For the past several years, I have kept my New Year’s resolutions small and interesting, rather than large and frightening, and I am happy to say that I have had a lot of success with them.  Last year, for example, my goal was to scatter light.  I wasn’t sure what that meant, all I knew was that I had been reading and studying wonderful ideas, and I was ready to share them, in one form or another, with the world.  In March, I created this website; in July, I published my e-book; in September, the book came out in print.  None of that was a stated part of my goal, but it all came naturally and organically from the desire to simply scatter light.  If my goal had been “to publish a book,” I’m not sure I would have accomplished anything.

So this year, I am interested in deepening my meditation practice, but setting any kind of specific meditation goal feels too daunting.  Instead, I have determined to read A Year with Hafiz: Daily Contemplations by Daniel Ladinsky.  Hafiz was a Persian poet who wrote about the sacred–something that can slowly and surely encourage and deepen my own meditation practice.  Who knows where these turtle steps will lead, but I know I’ll be further down this path a year from now than I am today.  Of course, by the end of the year, I’ll also be a trained life coach, but that feels less like a resolution and more like the beginning of an adventure!

Wishing you your own turtle steps,

Jennifer

Comfort, Joy & Mindless Eating

IMG_1607Thanksgiving arrived early this year, and with it began the season of gift-giving and of holiday celebrations.  It is a time of joy, a time to gather together with loved ones, a time to share the warmth of love and laughter.

Yet for many, this is a time of excess:  too much food, too much wine, too many parties, too many obligations, too much money spent.  And so I wonder, is there some way that we can bring more peace and balance into what should be a time of light and love?

Let’s begin with those holiday parties.  Wonderful food, holiday cocktails, a time to celebrate… yet many of us either fret away the evening trying not to ruin our diets, or, instead, indulge and indulge and indulge… and regret it the next day.

Instead of this all-or-nothing approach, try to find a place of balance between enjoying the moment, and feeling good the next day.  According to Mindless Eating: Why We Eat More Than We Think by Brian Wansink (one of my all-time favorite books about how and why we eat), we eat what we do because of hidden influencers:  the size of our plates, the atmosphere, the music playing, the company.  We cannot control (or completely ignore) all of these things, so the best thing to do is to fight fire with fire:  use your own tricks and tips to enjoy the holidays while protecting yourself from over-indulging.  Here are a few ideas:

1.  Make it a game.  Ask yourself–what can I do to slow down how fast I eat?  Perhaps serve yourself less than normal, and leave the leftovers in the other room so they aren’t as tempting.  Can I delay that snack I want?  Perhaps have a glass of water and see if you still feel hungry in 15 minutes.  Do I need the hamburger with cheese, bacon and avocado, or would I be just as happy with only the avocado?  Find clever ways to cut out a few calories here and there, without ever depriving yourself completely.

2.  Be patient.  Losing (or gaining) weight takes much less drastic measures than most of us believe.  The difference of a few bites can make a big difference when done daily.  Read Mindless Eating or The Four-Day Win: End Your Diet War and Achieve Thinner Peace by Martha Beck to learn more.

3.  Increase your joy.  Not only from food, but from everywhere.  That holiday party shouldn’t be about only the crab cakes and wine; it should be about the company.  Enjoy your friends, enjoy the music and the conversation, and don’t become too fixed on what you are or aren’t eating.

4.  Stay balanced.  When you get too hungry or too tired, of course your choices won’t be as good.  So take care of yourself.  Get enough rest, drink plenty of water and eat well.

5.  Create your own tricks.  Find what works and pass on what doesn’t.  I like to share meals or order appetizers; I use small plates, bowls and glasses (another Mindless Eating trick).  I try to eat slowly and take breaks so that I know when I’m full.  Doing these things allows me to enjoy everything I want, and still feel good later (and fit into my favorite jeans).

Wishing you joy, balance and all the pleasures of the season,

Jennifer

Casting Spells

It is October, a time of cool days and harvest moons.  As the light lengthens and fades, we surround ourselves with images of warmth and home:  apple cider, pumpkin pie, fires that burn bright against the night.  We turn away from summer days and greet the fall.

It is a time of action, a time to study or to work, a time to create before the world becomes still and cold and calls us to rest.  Halloween approaches.  It is a time of magic.

In honor of this magical season, I would like to share with you one simple spell that all good witches know and that never fails:  the spell of gratitude.

No wands, black cats or cauldrons required.  All you need is a moment in which to appreciate whatever it is in your life that brings you joy today.  There are times when many things will occur to you; at other times, you may struggle to begin.  So long as you do begin, no matter how small you start, you will find yourself finding more and more things to appreciate.

As both mystics and scientists tell us, where attention goes, energy flows.  And where appreciate goes–where love goes–magic happens.

If you really want to activate the magic, keep a gratitude journal.  I have a small book that I use to record at least five things a day for which I am particularly grateful.  Sometimes they are one word; sometimes they are much longer.  I try not to repeat myself, but there are some things that seem to creep into my list again and again (books, olive oil, roses, my family, pumpkin spice lattes…).  If it sings to me, I write it down.  I treasure it.  And in that place of treasuring, of gratitude, I feel my life transform around me.  My eyes open to more and more beauty; I appreciate the times, places and people that bring me joy.  I feel my world expand and change in ways that defy any explanation but this:  it’s magic.

This is the perfect season to practice magic, so find a book and pen you love and a quiet spot, cast your spells of gratitude, and see where the magic takes you.  I cannot tell you where your magic will lead, but I can say this:  the more practiced you are in working spells of gratitude, the more wonders you will find weaving their way into your life.

Wishing you new moons and pumpkins,

Jennifer

P.S.  I would love to hear what it is you are grateful for today–if you’d like, please cast your own spells of gratitude below!

Painting With Starlight

In every life there are moments when beauty calls and truth beckons.  These are the moments when our souls stir, and we realize that we are all artists and dream weavers.  Some of us paint with oil on canvas; others with needle and fabric; still others with flour and spice, earth and seed or wood and nails.  It does not matter how we paint; what matters is what we do with the knowledge that we are creators.

As artists we must listen to our hearts and learn to translate the messages we find there.  We must follow the paths we discover and, above all, we must trust that any song of the muses will find a place and serve a purpose in the world.

Are words the light with which you choose to paint?  Then take up a willing pen, eager to bend itself around the words you would write, and tell your story.  Lay down starlight, word by word and page by page, and all the powers of heaven and earth will assist you.  For words, once written, have a tendency to expand beyond any boundaries you might think to place upon them.

Live your art.  Write your story, using whatever medium sings to you.  Then leave the rest to time and space.

Wishing you starlight,

Jennifer

The Book Is Here!

“A Scattering of Light” is now available in print!

Since I began this journey last March, I have received numerous kind messages from many of you, encouraging me to continue to write and share my thoughts.  Without this support, I never would have completed this work, and I am truly grateful for you all.  My greatest desire is that the words and images I share bring comfort and joy, and perhaps a new perspective when times seem tough.  I hope that this new book will continue to spread messages of light and beauty, and find its way to those who might find peace within its pages.

In celebration of this journey, and as a heartfelt thank you to the many people who have supported me along the way, I am offering a 20% discount, for one week, on the list price of my book.  To take advantage of this discount, purchase the book here and enter the discount code J4J7YHET at checkout anytime through September 16th.  (The book may also be purchased on Amazon, either in print or as an e-book, but I am not able to offer a discount on Amazon’s regular prices.)

I would love to have as many people as possible take advantage of this limited-time offer, so if there is anyone you think would enjoy this work (and the 20% discount!), please spread the word and help me scatter more light!

With love and gratitude,

Jennifer

A Rebel’s Heart

Like many peace-lovers born under the sign of Libra, I’ve never considered myself a rebel.  I dislike conflict and treasure harmony.  This does not mean that I will stand aside or ignore cruelty, but I have never been one to rebel for rebellion’s sake.  Or so I thought.

The longer I write these pages, and the deeper I travel into the landscapes of peace, the more I realize that the paths of love and forgiveness are the most rebellious paths.  The world may give lip-service to these virtues, but most of our families and friends expect something different from us.  We are expected to choose sides–this politician, that sports team, this style of music, that genre of movies.  We trumpet our preferences and put down those who think differently, calling them ignorant, misinformed, lacking in taste or education.  We pick sides, and then battle to support them.

I am not suggesting that we should not campaign or vote for the politicians we believe in; cheer for our favorite teams; enjoy our favorite music and movies.  But what we can do–what it takes a rebel to do–is love the other side.  See the light that exists in them as well as in us.  Forgive where forgiveness is needed.  Educate with love rather than the rhetoric of hate.  Perpetuate kindness and compassion rather than adding more fuel to the fires of the world.

I am a rebel.  I choose love, work for beauty and treasure kindness.  I continue to believe that good exists throughout the world and that seeking it out will help it to grow.  I practice the arts of gentleness and patience with as much fierce devotion as the warriors of old.  It is a battle fought day by day, hour by hour.  It does not bring victory over others, but something far greater–all the joys of heaven and earth, for you and for those you share it with.

Wishing you your own rebellion,

Jennifer

P.S.  In just a few more days my book will be available for sale here and on Amazon!

News: A Scattering Of Light Is Coming Out In Print!

May you discover the beauty that lies in harmony.

May you find peace on a windy day.

Dear Readers,

I began with this website.  Next, I published what I consider the heart and soul of a Scattering of Light in e-book form.  Now, I am thrilled to announce, my book will soon be available in print!

For the past few weeks, I have been absorbed with the process of finalizing my book for print publication.  The result is 90 pages of my musings on the myths and legends, philosophies and spiritual traditions from around the world that inspire me the most and which I hope will inspire you.  You will recognize many of my articles and themes from this website (as well as over two dozen full-color photographs); in many cases these articles have been revised and expanded, as well as re-ordered in a way that flows more organically.  Many of the subjects I write about are intended to flow together in a way that is sometimes difficult to capture on a website.  Creating this book has allowed me the opportunity to present this information the way I always intended to:  as a labyrinth-like journey through my favorite stories and wisdom teachings.

Reminders of peace are all too few to come by.  It is my wish that, should you ever find yourself caught unbalanced on a windy day, you will take comfort from the images and words that have stayed with me through times both calm and stormy.

Wishing you peace, beauty and harmony,

Jennifer

*Stay tuned!  ”A Scattering of Light” will soon be available for sale here, on Amazon and in stores and bookstores!
